eNavigation 2009 November 19, 2009

Yesterday and today I’ve been attending the annual eNavigation 2009 conference in Seattle, WA. Incredibly interesting to mingle with the movers and shakers in the field of electronic navigation. I have been able to raise the flag for us working mariner types during question and answer sessions and in conversations during the breaks and lunch.

A lot is coming between now and 2012, when new mandatory ECDIS carriage requirements start to kick in.

The good folks from Phillips Publishing (Pacific Maritime magazine, etc) have pulled out all the stops to make this a user friendly event, and they have succeeded quite well. I only wish that the regulatory bodies and the manufacturers of eNav products would work as hard to please the end user. I’ve said as much here. I’m working for you, the men ans women at sea who have to use all this stuff. I have my own opinions about eNav technology, as some of you are well aware, but the bottom line is this: It’s coming, and you’d better get used to it and you’d best become expert at using it, because you will be held liable if you don’t.

Oops, the speeches commence.

Sail safe,

Doug
