I’m s seafaring kind of guy. I’ve been on or in salt water since before I could walk. I got my first boat job on Maui way back when, and realized the Captain was making 5 times as much as I was. So I decided to become a Captain too. Sometimes I wish there had been an engineer on that boat, to give me another option…

These days I hold:

Master 1600 tons (3000 ITC) Oceans

Master of Towing Oceans and Western Rivers

Master Aux Sail 100 tons Oceans

AB Unlimited

AB Sail

And all the other acronym-ic crap the powers that be have decided to make us carry around with us. I feel safer now, don’t you? Thank you, G. W. Bush.

I’ll be sitting for Master AGT Inland this fall, and then jumping from there to 2/M Unlimited Oceans if the USCG NMC evaluators can wrap their heads around that one.

These days I’m working at the Pacific Maritime Institute in Seattle, WA doing building a new z-drive tug simulator and simulation projects.

I’m a guitar player, have played since age nine. Mostly blues and rock, I’ve been in several working bands over the years, done studio session work, and about six years ago recorded an album with my son Drew.

I split my time between Maury Island, WA (home of the famous “Maury Island Incident), Belltown in Seattle, WA, and I also spend as much time as possible on Maui, where I seem to play my music the best.

Doug- What the hell are you doing out there? I remember, getting your tonnage (had to do the same thing in Guam…and it hurt). Hope you don’t have too much longer out there, but from your stories you are makng the best of it. I was stationed on the USCGC Mallow (buoy tender) out of Hono and the Marshalls and such were our op area. Brings back memories, interesting part of the world. Hope all is well, say hi to Drew for me. Is he still rocking the drums?
Meg and our little Eva are doing great. I finally got all done with CM/Master AGT and received my CM MMC. Jesus, they don’t make that easy.
Out in S. Korea right now for a 120 2nd mate job w/ Matson. Looking for that next CM job with Matson. Right now, no dice. Happy where I am though. Peace.
